YOKOHAMA, Japan — From peacocks to butterflies to precious minerals, the color-changing effect of iridescence is one of the most stunning visual phenomena in nature. It is especially notable in opals, a mineraloid formed from hydrated silica. One of the most striking – not to mention rarest and most valuable – variants is the black opal, most often found in New South Wales, Australia. Now, however, eagle-eyed drivers in the United States and Canada may spot the gemstone's multicolored dazzle at their nearest INFINITI Retailer.
Black opal's miraculous color-changing nature has been captured by INFINITI designers and will soon grace the 2023 INFINITI Q50 Red Sport 400. Just like the gemstone for which it is named, the new Black Opal Edition package will be extremely rare, with a limited number available nationwide.
The package features striking Black Opal Metallic paint that shimmers and shifts between blue, green and purple hues depending on lighting and viewing angle. The unique paint renders the sport sedan even more eye-catching as it appears to change colors from one moment to the next. Moreover, automotive enthusiasts will recognize the color-shifting hue as one of the most iconic and legendary paint colors from Japanese supercar history: Midnight Purple.
In addition to its opalescent exterior, the Q50 Black Opal Edition benefits from the added subtlety of satin black exterior logos and badges. At the car's rear, a spoiler constructed of exposed carbon fiber provides a supplementary sporty touch, while seamlessly complementing the Q50's body lines.
The 2023 INFINITI Q50 RED SPORT 400 has strong performance to back up its visual appeal. It features a responsive, 3.0-liter VR-series twin-turbo V6 engine with an impressive 400 maximum horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, plus uprated brakes with four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers and Dynamic Digital Suspension. For 2023, Q50 includes the added benefit of the INFINITI Premium Care integrated maintenance program.
Available exclusively for customers in the U.S. and Canada, the Black Opal Edition package costs $2,2001 USD and is available for RED SPORT 400 models with either rear-wheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. The 2023 Q50 RED SPORT 400 starts at $56,500 USD.
